BMX South Champs: the lowdown on an amazing event
We were greeted mostly with rain this weekend at the BMX South Champs in Bournemouth, but it sure didn’t stop anyone from having an amazing time. The BMX community is a hardy bunch, so a few drops were never going to deter the riders from taking on Bournemouth’s BMX track.
Animal pro dirt jumper Sam Hodgson came up from the Isle of Wight for the occasion, and we took this opportunity to surprise him with his AW18 rider order. Needless to say the man was stoked. His first outfit of choice consisted of the Lister tee, Rupe hoodie (which he later ruined) and olive green Byro jacket, the lot topped off with the ever-so-comfy Allex beanie.
After spotting a couple of interesting lines on the BMX track, Sam decided to take part in the King of Dirt practice session and proceeded with a couple of basic tricks (no footed can cans and no handers are pretty basic for Sam).
The crowd and the groms were pretty impressed so he thought he’d step it up a notch and gunned for an underflip. It didn’t quite work out. He went flying hands first into the concrete and scraped his left elbow and hip pretty bad.
Saturday’s activities were all about having fun and raising money for Mind, with the King of Dirt event taking centre stage. At that game, it was Max Penny from Team Mind who dominated and snatched himself an Urban Explorer backpack, Allex beanie and Silverlabel action camera. Congrats Max!
On the other hand, Sunday was all about getting down to business. The turnout was insane with over 300 competitors competing for the South Champs title in their respective categories, and about just as many spectators soaking in the action. The BMX community is a tight knit and passionate one, and it was refreshing to see all genders, ages and backgrounds getting together like a big happy family.
The kids were super stoked to meet Sam and most of them ended up hanging out in the Animal tent whenever they weren’t on the tracks, exchanging Instagram usernames and showing each other their favourite clips.
The finals were genuinely impressive, the South region is home to a fair few world class riders and it showed.
Overall, we were over the moon to be a part of this event. It was a truly inspiring weekend, and a great opportunity for us to get involved with something that was so close to the roots of the brand. The lanyards and stickers we were giving away for free throughout the weekend went flying out the tent, and our Holeshot prize winners were super happy to be receiving their Animal goods.
