Animal introduces: model Joss Ash
We catch up with Joss Ash, face of our Autumn/Winter 2017 collection and surfing champ, to ask him all about life on the move. From the rugged coastline of north Cornwall to taking a trip or two to the shores of Indonesia, we find out how a balance in life is just as important as balance on the board.
Tell us a bit about yourself and where you're from?
I grew up on the north Cornish coast at a little spot called Widemouth Bay. Since the age I can remember I have been in the sea, and made surfing my job as soon as I could. Today I travel the world modelling and surfing, and love what I do.
How did you first get into modelling?
I was given opportunities early on but avoided them, as I could never imagine working in the city away from the surf. I met a girl who lived in the States and she kinda pushed me into it. I thought, “ok" as it was a way of funding my travel and living expenses whilst out there. I walked into an agency in London called Storm and they signed me on the day, with my first job being two days later.
…And what do you like most about it?
I love the travel, the places you go that you wouldn't normally and the creative people that I meet. I feel very blessed to travel the world and get paid to do it.

Tell us about how you got on at the shoot with us?
I really enjoy shooting with Animal, as it’s more like a good day out having fun with friends. The new lines look great!!
What do you like about the Animal brand?
Casual outdoor feel that embodies easy living and fun times.
How do you strike a work/life/surf balance?
I feel like I have a good thing going at the moment. Any free time I'm not working I'm down in Cornwall surfing and hanging out with my family and friends. I feel it's good to have something outside of your day-to-day work that you’re passionate about. Surfing has always been that for me and I still keep my hand in it professionally.

Having travelled all over, what’s your favourite surf spot, and what makes it special?
I love Indonesia. February this year was my 17th trip out there and I've probably spent almost two years of my life out there surfing. Great food, people, waves and some of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen.
Along with your surfing, are there any other ways you like to stay fit and healthy?
I'm so lucky that I started surfing, otherwise the amount I eat and basically chilling all the time I would be the shape of a potato now. Skateboarding, tennis and playing the drums helps burn off the cakes. :)
