Animal introduces: model Sophie Young
Jet setting, working in the Ibiza sunshine, downtime at home… and not a 9 to 5 in sight. We catch up with Sophie Young, star of our Animal Autumn/Winter 2017 photoshoot to find out more about life from the shores of tropical Queensland to modelling all over the world.
Tell us a bit about yourself and where you’re from?
I’m Sophie Young. I grew up in a small town in Queensland, Australia. I started dancing competitively when I was about 6 or 7 and fell in love with it. When I was 15 I begged my parents to let me dance full time, so I finished my last two years of school at home and went to a full time dance school in Brisbane.
Then at 17 I begged my parents, again, to let me move to Sydney to go to a full-time contemporary dance course. After a year there I felt like Sydney wasn’t a big enough city for me so I packed my bags again and moved to London - and I’ve been here almost 5 years now!
So how did you first get into modelling?
Modelling’s something I’ve always been interested in. My grandma was a model in the 50s so I grew up seeing all of her photos, and when I was little I did a few modelling jobs - but I would only do it if my brother and sister did it too because I was too shy, haha.
I think it was my second day in London I was walking down the King’s Road in Chelsea with my grandad, and someone from Storm Models stopped me and asked if I’d ever thought about modelling - and I signed with them that day.
What do you like most about modelling?
I feel like I’m a very sporadic person and this industry is the same, haha. No two days are the same and I like the excitement you get every time you book a job. I also really love that it has introduced me to so many amazing people that I wouldn’t have otherwise met.
So tell us about the photoshoot with us…
I always love working with Animal. It’s always such a fun, chilled out atmosphere with amazing people.
We went to Cheddar Gorge and The Blue Pool in Dorset, which was amazing! Two places I’d never been before but both were so beautiful. It’s always a little weird calling it work when you get to hang out and play dress up in these incredible places.
What are your favourite things about the Animal brand?
I like the laid-back surf vibe of Animal. Growing up on the beach it’s definitely a style I’m into. Also being from Queensland I’m not so good with the cold and Animal definitely know how to do a coat!
Being on-the-go, how do you strike a work/life balance?
Being a dancer I’ve spent my life exercising and that’s something I still find very important. I try to get to the gym 5 or 6 times a week. I feel it helps to clear my mind as much as keep me fit.
I live with my sister who is my best friend so that makes things a lot easier, ‘cause I get to see her every time I come home. She’s a lot more organised than I am and always plans fun things ahead of time - which is good. I’m definitely not a planner so it’s nice to have her here to look after me haha.
Has your job given you the chance to travel and see new places?
Yes, I’ve been so lucky to travel to some amazing places with work. One of the most memorable was a trip to Ibiza. There were 6 models and we were all friends beforehand - we ‘worked’ for 4 days and had 4 days off. That was a lot of fun!
Do you have a favourite place to unwind? What is it about this place that helps you relax?
I’m generally a very relaxed person so it doesn’t take a lot haha - but definitely my favourite place is home at my Mum and Dad’s house in Australia. I go home every year for Christmas and it’s the best time to unwind and regroup before coming back to the city in the New Year. Sunshine, the beach, BBQs and family time. It’s the best!
