With summer in full swing, there’s never been a better time to get out there and get active. Rain, cold and hours of darkness mean it’s not always easy to jump on the fitness bandwagon in the winter, but with light summer mornings and balmy evenings, there’s now no excuse not to get amongst it.

Running is one of our top picks for outdoor fitness activities. It does wonders for both body and mind, and is super easy to get into. You may ask: “what is there to be advised on? Can’t I just go out and run?” Sure, of course you can, but knowing what to wear running will make a huge difference to both your experience and performance.

We’ve put together a little guide to the best running gear, including all your running essentials, those little things that go a long way in turning your daily circuit into something to enjoy. Guess you could consider this as a beginner’s guide to running.

Technical clothing

The first rule when it comes to performance running: invest in some good technical clothing.

By technical clothing, we mean running gear (tops, t-shirts or vests) that features moisture wicking materials. Cotton based garments are a non-starter, as they will absorb sweat, get heavier and leave you wet and cold.

Instead, look for polyester based fabrics that wick sweat away from the skin and allow your body to adjust its temperature more easily. For a little extra stretch and comfort, materials with up to 15% elastane are the way to go—they’ll give good flexibility without losing shape over time.

Sports bra

Female runners know the one thing you can’t live without when running is a good sports bra; something that is both comfortable and supportive.

If you’re an A- or B-cup size, then a crop-top compression style will be perfect, whilst larger sizes should look for moulded cups. Either way, adjustable straps are an absolute must, with multi-way designs giving you the ultimate in fitting options to maximize comfort.

Why not combine your sports bra and moisture wicking top into one with the Kayleigh double layer top?

Running shorts/leggings

To stay fleet of foot, opt for either running shorts, or running leggings—for that little extra warmth. Again, make sure to look for moisture wicking styles.

We make both a full-length legging, for those colder months, and a ¾ version for hotter days. Their 3-panel construction gives an ultra-slimming silhouette and contoured fit, meaning they remain secure no matter how hard you work. The vibrant Zhanna 3/4 leggings were recently featured in Escapism Magazine.

For shorts, look for built-in briefs for comfort and polyester/elastane fabrics for both performance and durability. Our Cathy Cross shorts feature all of the above, are supremely lightweight and silky smooth with flatlock seams, meaning you can really pick up the pace.

Extra features, such as hairband zip pull, reflective branding, secure zip pockets and hot pink trim, make the Cathy Cross shorts a force to be reckoned with, earning them the nod from those in the know, including: Top SantéWomen’s Fitness and Healthy Magazine.

Some extra running tips

Now that you have your running essentials dialed, make sure you consider these little extra tips to make for an even better experience:

When you’re running for a while, chances are you’re going to be exposed to the sun. To avoid painful burns and the risk of sunstroke, make sure to apply plenty of sun cream, paying close attention to the nose, ears and neck. Additionally, consider covering your head with a cool snapback, and protect your eyes from UV A, B and C rays with a pair of sport-ready sunglasses.

Standing out in dusky light is essential; luckily our entire range boasts reflective detailing, making you more visible in night traffic but remaining subtle in daylight hours.

Listening to tunes on the move is how we like to run, so we’ve included audio ports into most of our running tops. (Sanya SprintLea FelixSamtosa FlameKayleighAllyson Rush).

Zip pockets

An eternal dilemma for runners is how to carry those essential valuables when clocking up the miles? To keep your belongings safe, we’ve featured zip pockets across most of our Active range.

For the Rapunzels out there, keeping your hair out of the way is a must, it’ll keep your neck cool and your vision clear! For this reason, we’ve incorporated hairband zip pulls into many of our Active pieces for those days when you’ve forgotten to pocket one. Sometimes it’s the little things that go a long way!
