RedBull Unleashed - An Introduction
Surf Snowdonia, the biggest hit in surfing this year will be host for the first ever Wavegarden competition. Hosted by RedBull, this event will see some of the best international surfers battle it out for the prestigious first of its kind trophy.
Set in Dolgarrog, Wales, Surf Snowdonia is the first ever commercial Wavegarden to be opened. As well as attracting worldwide media attention, it presents a huge opportunity for British surfing as it provides young and old surfers with consistent waves all year round. What does that mean? It means that by taking the unpredictability of surfing out the equation, you can steepen your progression curve quite radically. No matter what level you are, you can practice your turns over and over again, ensuring a quick(er) access to the top of your performance potential.
The wave is suited for all types of ability, and especially high performance. The 3-4ft walls peel off either left or right for about 15-20 seconds, providing ample opportunities for pros to showcase their many talents. And that’s what the RedBull Unleashed competition was made for.
Red Bull Unleashed will feature a brand new competition where surfers will compete head-to-head, wave for wave, in best of five matches (waves), the winner advancing to the next round.
In another departure from conventional surf events, the judging panel will be made up of an esteemed crew of former pro tour legends, including Pipemaster Jake Paterson, former World no.2 and XXL winner Brad Gerlach, as well as European charger Alain Riou.
“The potential is there for some crazy performances to go down,” said Paterson. “With a stacked talent roster from around the world, bringing names you never normally see in competition, surf fans are in for a real show.”
The RedBull Unleashed contest also offers spectators a brand new approach to watching surf comps, as the Wavegarden Lake provides us with the perfect arena feel.
Not only can spectators watch the action go down really close-up from the shore, there will also be an opportunity for people to climb onto the middle pontoon where the surfers will be going mad just a few feet away.
The novelty factor the event brings has attracted some of the best free-surfers in the world. Our very own Alan Stokes along with 3 other Brits were invited to mix it up with the likes of Internet sensation Jack Freestone, Albee Layer, Brendon Gibbens, former world-tour resident Yadin Nicol, Dillon Perillo, Zeke Lau, Marc Lacomare and others…
Out of anyone invited to the event, Stokesy has probably the most amount of Wavegarden experience and therefore has a good chance at a solid result.
