Catching up with yoga guru Philly Lewis

14 Dec

As we launch our brand new women’s active collection, we thought we’d send the range for a little test drive. Who better than Animal advocate and yoga guru Philly Lewis to give us her first impressions, and a few of her own training tips.

Pops of neon orange and eye-catching graphics have got our attention… First impressions on our new Active range?

Love it. The bright colours really give you the burst of energy you need!

If you could pick a favourite, which piece would it be and why?

It would have to be the Lila Dash running hoodie for me. Super light and warm, perfect for running but also completely breathable! I also love the new eco friendly yoga mat.

Do you have a go-to yoga routine for strength and toning – something to get the heart rate up?

I always incorporate a lot of core work in my yoga to tone, and a lot of flows to keep the blood pumping and body warm. The core supports the whole body so it is super important to keep it working. I do a lot of planks, a lot of boat pose sit ups, all followed with a vinyasa.

We love the handy spare hairband on the Zhanna Leggings and Cathy Cross Shorts... What are some of the little things you always take with you?

A water bottle and a good playlist! Always…

Living and breathing an active lifestyle, any top tips for staying motivated during workouts?

Finding the right music to get your body moving is hugely important to me. Also shaking up your routine, trying out something new when you lose motivation can be really good. Swap running for rock climbing, yoga for Pilates, or surfing for swimming. Shake it up! Find something you actually enjoy and helps you mentally rather than just physically.

Resting your body can often be just as important as making time to stay fit. What sort of things help you unwind and recover after a tough session?

Yin yoga really helps me release in ways nothing else will. It allows me to get deep into the connective tissue and fascia, finding deep releases as well as allowing me to focus on the breath and slow everything down. If my energy is really low, then I’ll just have a hot bath and a cup of tea, works every time!

Last but not least! We want to know… your favourite place to practice yoga, top running route and no.1 surf spot?

I travel a lot with my retreats (Wild & Free Adventures) so my favourite place changes all the time! I love to take all my exercise outside; I'm a big believer in being outdoors as much as we can. I love to do yoga anywhere that's quiet, sometimes it's a yoga shala in Costa Rica, sometimes it's in my living room at home in Cornwall.

The great thing about yoga is that you can do it anywhere. I love running along beaches, in Costa Rica or Cornwall. I also love trail runs along the cliffs by Bedruthan. I love my local surf beach Fistral, but the warm waters abroad are amazing!
